1-First Step: Prepare Your Pan

Start by thoroughly greasing your 13Γ—9-inch pan with butter, cooking spray, or a light coating of vegetable oil. This step is crucial because it prevents the sticky marshmallow mixture from adhering to the pan, making removal and cutting much easier. Set the prepared pan aside while you work on the stovetop mixture.

2-Second Step: Melt the Butter

Place your large saucepan over low heat and add the 3 tablespoons of butter. Allow it to melt slowly and completely, swirling the pan occasionally to help it along. Keep the heat low to prevent the butter from browning or burning, which could give your Rice Krispie Treats an unwanted flavor.

3-Third Step: Add and Melt the Marshmallows

Once the butter has completely melted, add your marshmallows to the saucepan. If you’re using large marshmallows, consider cutting them in half to help them melt more quickly and evenly. Stir continuously with your wooden spoon or spatula, making sure to scrape the bottom and sides of the pan to prevent any sticking or burning.

4-Fourth Step: Combine with Cereal

Remove the saucepan from heat immediately after the marshmallows have fully melted. This is an important step because continued heat exposure can make your treats too hard once they cool. Working quickly, add all 6 cups of crisped rice cereal to the melted marshmallow mixture.

Stir thoroughly but gently, using a folding motion to coat every piece of cereal evenly. The goal is to distribute the marshmallow mixture throughout without crushing the cereal. Continue stirring until no dry cereal remains and everything is well coated.

5-Fifth Step: Press into Prepared Pan

Transfer the coated cereal mixture to your prepared 13Γ—9-inch pan. Using a buttered spatula, buttered wax paper, or even your greased hands, press the mixture firmly and evenly into the pan. Pressing firmly helps the treats hold together properly and prevents them from crumbling when cut.

6-Sixth Step: Cool and Cut

Allow your Rice Krispie Treats to cool at room temperature for approximately 30 minutes. The cooling time allows the marshmallow to set and hold everything together.
